Basic Crochet Stitches
Learning to crochet starts with the basic stitches. The slip knot and the magic ring are both ways to begin your project, but if you’re just starting out, I recommend beginning with the slip knot and then checking out the chain stitch tutorial. The single crochet is a great next step when you’re learning to crochet.
Increasing and Decreasing the Basic Stitches
To shape your crochet project (to make it wider, narrower, rounder) you use increases and decreases. An increase simply means working two stitches into the same stitch, and a decrease means combining two stitches into one. You’ll use these techniques not only at the beginning or end of a row, but in the middle as well. The method stays the same.
