Free Crochet Pattern Pocket Potholders

My sister has always used potholders with an insert pocket, and at some point I realized I had never come across a crochet pattern for one. So I decided to design my own. I grabbed some cotton yarn in the colors of her kitchen and worked the Alternating Spike Stitch, which gives the potholder a wonderfully thick and textured feel. The best part: throughout the entire pattern you simply repeat the same row, making it a relaxing and beginner‑friendly project. You can easily leave out the pocket, a single potholder is already thick enough on its own. The finished measurements are approximately 20 x 20 cm (about 8 x 8 inches).
I’m excited to share this pattern with you. Below you’ll find the materials, a video tutorial of the stitch used, and the full written instructions so you can crochet your own pocket potholders.

Crochet Pattern Pocket Potholders
We’ll start by crocheting the pocket first.
Ch 38 to begin in the color beige.
Row 1
1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. 1 sc in each ch until the end of the row. Turn. (37 sc)
Row 2
Ch 1 (counts as the first stitch, so do not work into the first stitch), *1 sc in the next stitch, 1 ssc in the next stitch*. Repeat between * and * until the end of the row. At the end of the work 1 sc in the ch of the previous row. Turn.
Rows 3, 4, 5, 6,
Repeat row 2
Rows 7 and 8
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Note: You might find the little peaks right after the color change a bit less neat, but once you’re one row further, you’ll see the stitches start to form much more nicely.
Rows 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Rows 15 and 16
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Rows 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Rows 23 and 24
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Rows 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Rows 31 and 32
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Rows 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Rows 39 and 40
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Now the pocket is finished, fasten of. This is the part you need to crochet first.
Repeat Rows 1 through 40 once more, do not fasten off after row 40, but continue with the pattern below to crochet the longer section of the potholder.
Rows 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 and 46
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Rows 47 en 48
Change to black and repeat row 2.
Rows 49, 50, 51, 52 and 53
Change to beige and repeat row 2.
Row 54
Continue crocheting with the beige yarn. We’re now going to crochet around the potholder, make the hanging loop, and attach the pocket.
Step 1
Start with a repeat of Row 2:
Ch 1 (counts as the first stitch, so do not work into the first stitch), *1 sc in the next stitch, 1 ssc in the next stitch*. Repeat between * and * until you’ve reached the corner, work 1 sc in the ch of the previous row.
Step 2
Continue at the corner, make the loop: ch 15, sl st into the first ch you made. Then make 1 sc in the same corner stitch.
Step 3
Now we’re going to work around the corner. Work 1 sc into the side of each row. When you reach the second black stripe, place the small piece/pocket on top of your work and join the two pieces together using sc. At each corner, make 3 sc in the same stitch. Along the bottom and the top of the potholder, work 1 sc in each stitch.
Step 4
When you reach the loop again, work 20 sc into the loop. Sl st into the next stitch around the corner and fasten off.
Your pocket potholder is now finished!
