The Long Single Crochet stitch is also known as the Spike Stitch. A long single crochet is worked around a normal single crochet of a previous row. It is a great stitch for projects that needs more firmness and thickness, like for example a basket.

You can play with color by working the long single crochet in a contrasting color, like I did with the white row (see above). But the stitch has a nice texture in one color as well.
