How to Crochet the Bobble Stitch

This bobble stitch adds a playful texture to your crochet project. It looks beautiful in a single color, but using multiple colors gives it a fun, lively effect. The bobbles shift subtly from one another and are visible on only one side of your work. You can use this stitch to make a cozy cowl, a bag, potholder or a cushion. This stitch is also sometimes called the Honeycomb Stitch.
A bobble stitch is not the same as a popcorn stitch. A popcorn stitch pops out on the front of the row you’re working, while the bobble stitch pushes toward the back. You can make it pop to the front, but the result won’t be optimal. If you’re looking for a bobble that shows on both sides of your work, the puff stitch is your best option.
On this page, I explain 5 rows. You can keep repeating rows 2 through 5 to continue your project. For the Bobble Stitch, start with a foundation chain that is a multiple of 3, plus 1 extra chain.

Special Stitch – Bobble – Bob
5x into the same stitch: Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull the yarn through 2 loops on your hook. Another way of explaining this part of the stitch: Work five double crochets into the same stitch, leaving each one unfinished.
Once you’ve done this 5 times, you’ll end up with 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over one last time and pull through all 6 loops to complete the bobble. Push the bobble to the back of your work.
Chain a multiple of 3 + 1 extra chain.
Note: the turning chain does not count as a stitch
