How to Crochet the Cable Stitch / Cross-Over Stitch

This is a simple cable stitch, which is a good stepping stone before you start with the more challenging cables. This stitch is also known as the Cross-Over stitch. The stitch looks slightly different on the back side of your work.

Basic stitches used in this tutorial: Chain, single crochet, double crochet

I will explain how to crochet 3 rows. You can repeat rows 2 and 3 to continue working.

Chain a multiple of 4 + 2 extra.

Row 1
1 single crochet in the 2nd chain, 1 single crochet in each of the next chains, turn.

Row 2
Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), 1 double crochet in the 3rd stitch of the row, 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches. Now we are going to work in the skipped stitch, which is just before the group of 3 double crochet; Work a double crochet into this skipped stitch, pull the loop up a little higher than usual when you pull the yarn through the stitch.

Row 3
