How to Crochet the Granny Stripe Stitch

This stitch is popular for a reason: it’s very easy to crochet and offers plenty of opportunities to play with color. You can change colors with every row, or every few rows for a more subtle effect. Gradient yarn also shines beautifully in this stitch. The granny stripe is often used in blanket patterns, but it’s also very suitable for garments or a scarf.
In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the first three rows. To keep going, just repeat rows 2 and 3. To begin the Granny Stripe stitch, chain a multiple of 3, then add 1 extra chain.
