How to crochet the Sultan stitch

Because the Sultan stitch is both beautiful to crochet in one color as in two colors, I decided to show both options, which you see in the example above. You can use this stitch for many purposes, like for example a summer top, scarf, table runner or bag. I used the Sultan stitch for the pattern of the Sage Green Bag.

The tutorial of the Sultan Stitch contains 5 rows. You will keep repeating rows 2 to 5 until you’ve reached the desired size. Chain a multiple of 4 + 5 for this stitch.

Chain a multiple of 4 + 5

  • Row 1: Skip 5 ch, work in the next ch: 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc. *Skip 3 ch, work in the next ch: 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc* repeat from * to * until you have 3 ch left. Skip 2 ch, 1 dc in last ch. turn.
  • Row 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc). *4 dc in next ch space* repeat from * to *, work 1 dc in the last stitch (chain of the previous row). Turn.
  • Row 3: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and a ch 1), 1 dc in the same stitch. * Work 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc into the space between the 4-dc groups from the previous row.* repeat from * to * until the last dc-group. Work: 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc into the last stitch (chain). Turn.
  • Row 4: ch 3, 2 dc in the ch-1 space. *4 dc in next ch-2 space* repeat from * to * until the last ch-2 space. Work 3 dc into the last ch-1 space. Turn.
  • Row 5: ch 3, skip 3 stitches * work 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in front of the 4-dc group of the previous row.* repeat this until you reach the last 3 stitches. 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in the space before the last 3 stitches. 1 dc in the last stitch (ch of the previous row). Turn.

Keep repeating rows 2 to 5.
