How to Single Crochet Front Loop Only SC FLO

When crocheting, sometimes a simple change in where you place your hook can transform the look and feel of your stitches. The front loop single crochet is one of those small adjustments that makes a big difference. The abbreviation for the Single Crochet Front Loop Only is SC FLO.
You’ll often see this technique in amigurumi patterns or when adding a neat ribbing edge to garments. Working into the front loop gives your stitch a subtle stretch and a clean, streamlined appearance. Sometimes, a crochet pattern will instruct you to crochet in the front loop, because you will need to use the remaining back loop later on.
Working single crochet in the front loop creates a very different effect compared to working in the back loop.
- Front loop single crochet → smoother fabric, crisp lines, slightly less stretch
- Back loop single crochet → deeper ridges, more texture, and greater stretch
By switching between front and back loops, you can play with texture, stretch, and style, giving your crochet projects a unique finish.
