Free Crochet Pattern Cozy Headband

Since the weather’s getting colder, I worked extra hard on this crochet pattern for you. I couldn’t just leave you out in the cold! Thankfully, this cozy headband whips up in an evening and doesn’t need much yarn. The stitch gives it a nice, thick texture, so you’ll be ready to step outside, shielded from the chill. Below, you’ll find everything you need to make this headband, along with the full pattern.

This crochet pattern is an original design by Lisa Geerts from Free-Crochet-Patterns.com. You’re welcome to share the link, but the pattern itself may not be copied, reproduced, or published anywhere else. This pattern is for personal, non-commercial use only. I’m able to offer it for free because it has not been formally tested

Supplies

  • 30 grams – Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic) yarn in the color of your choice
  • Alternative DK weight yarn: 30 grams Scheepjes Colour Crafter (100% acrylic)
  • Crochet hook 4.0 mm
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Measurements

The headband measures 50 x 8 cm (20 x 3 inches) unblocked and unstretched. This is smaller than your head circumference, as the headband will stretch to fit when worn. This bit of stretch is important to prevent it from slipping down.

Want to adjust the size? Make sure the number of foundation chains is a multiple of 2 + 1, and remember to crochet it about 5 cm (2 inches) smaller than your head circumference.

Gauge: 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches) = 15 rows and 16 stitches.

Crochet Stitches and abbreviations

  • Chain (ch)
  • Mini Bean Stitch (mini bean) – Insert the hook through the indicated stitch, yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch, yarn over and insert the hook through the same stitch. Yarn over and pull the yarn through the stitch. You will have 4 loops on your hook now, yarn over and pull the yarn through all 4 loops.

Chain 81

Row 1
1 Mini Bean (see above instructions) in the 3rd chain from the hook, chain 1. *Skip 1 chain, Mini Bean in the next chain, chain 1*. Repeat between * and * until the end of the row. Turn. Note: This row ends with a chain 1.

Row 2
Chain 1 (you’ve already worked a chain 1 at the end of the previous row, so you will have 2 chains now). Work this row in the Mini Beans of the previous row, skip the chains between the Mini Beans. 1 Mini Bean in the first Mini Bean of the previous row, chain 1. *Skip the chain of the previous row, 1 Mini Bean in the Mini Bean of the previous row, chain 1*. Repeat between * and * until the end of the row. Turn.

Rows 3 t/m 12

Repeat row 2. My headband fits snugly over my ears; if you’d like a bit more coverage, simply add a few extra rows. Leave a long tail for sewing the headband together.

Make the Twist

When it’s time to assemble the headband, you can add a fun twist to it, just like I did. Below, you’ll find a photo tutorial along with step-by-step written instructions.

Make the Twist Cozy Headband

Step 1: Fold the headband in half (this will be the outside of your headband) and place the ends over each other so that the left side covers approximately half of the right side.

Step 2: Fold the left side to the back, wrapping it around the right side.

Step 3: Now fold the right part forward, wrapping it around the front section.

Step 4: Sew the sections together. Make sure you sew through all 4 layers. Turn your headband inside out and it’s ready!

I hope you had a great time making this headband. I’d love to see how your headband turned out. Drop me a message or tag me on the socials, so I can admire your work. Can’t wait to see it. Lisa
